Why use a drying agent?

If you want to prevent your expensive lenses and optical accessories, eyepieces, CCD cameras, and so on suffering due to moisture in closed containers, then it is advisable to take the same precautions as is customary in research labs for expensive instruments, i.e. to place a small flat bag of desiccant in the telescope or equipment case or container.

You can thus prevent extremely irritating condensation forming on the inside of lenses, mirrors, or Schmidt plates; especially if you can prevent new moisture from getting into the telescope by always using a star diagonal or a filter in the focuser when changing accessories.

– The pearls are bright pink when dry, but turn white and transparent when saturated with moisture.

– During the transitional period, the beads become temporarily paler, so that you can pretty well judge the state of saturation.

To re-use: put the beads on a plate, place it in the oven and slowly heat it up to a temperature of around 60 to 70 degrees (please do use a preheated oven, as this may cause the pearls to burst). After about 5-6 hours, the silica gel is once again bright pink and can be used again.

This process can be repeated as many times as you like. Here, nothing must be thrown away as often happens with other drying agents.
